Our project, "Game Changers - Extra Time," is a National Lottery-funded, three-year project designed to enhance sport, health, and physical activity opportunities for senior pupils with additional support needs as they transition beyond school. TAG, as an organisation are led by and for people with disabilities across the country, we strive to place the voices of disabled individuals at the core of every project we develop, including this one.
The Game Changers - Extra Time programme aims to:
- Encourage students to take ownership of their fitness and overall well-being.
- Offer ongoing mentorship and opportunities for skill development, including accredited coaching qualifications.
- Build community among students and broaden their social networks.
- Promote awareness around the benefits of physical activity and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
- Develop pathways into recreational activities that appeal to young people for when they leave school.
The programme is structured around three key components: Extra Time Athletes, Extra Time Forums, and Extra Time Champions.
1. Extra Time Athletes:
This component introduces students to the programme through interactive workshops focused on the benefits of physical activity and healthy living. The workshops are designed to familiarise students with TAG and help us understand their interests, potentially leading to tailored taster sessions within our community network. Following this introduction, selected students may receive one-on-one support to create an “Aim to Goal” plan – a personalised graphic plan to help guide them through setting goals and outcomes in relation to physical activity and health.
2. Extra Time Forums:
These forum will provide a space for teachers, parents, carers, and other relevant organisations to exchange experiences, insights, and challenges regarding engaging school leavers in physical activities outside of school. By identifying barriers and sharing strategies, the forum supports the transition process for students, offering a structured environment for continuous feedback and programme adaptation.
3. Extra Time Champions:
Our Champions are selected from people with disabilities we have engaged with in the past. They are inspiring individuals with fantastic backgrounds in sport and physical activity. They will help design awareness training for mainstream sport and physical activity organisations and will also participate in our introductory workshops within ASN schools sharing their stories. As part of our Champions prep we provide training in presentation skills, public speaking, and personal development.
I have attached a couple of our promotional materials for your interest. The brochure is for the students in the schools and the forums flyer is for any parents that might be interested.
